Bike paths, a gate at Robald Ave., and a sports park

What do those three things in the title of this post have in common? They were all proposed at the November 24, 2009 Shelley city council meeting. I'm not sure where the bike paths would be but I suppose they would increase safety for bikers, although I wonder how much more safety bikers would get from the paths. Is this a case of diminishing marginal returns where the city puts forth the money for a marginal increase or no increase in safety? I don't know so more information would need to be had by the public before we sign off on it.

How many people would be in favor of gating off Robald Ave. (the street behind the football field)? From what I can tell the pros are less traffic for residents of Holley St. Some residents have complained about local high schoolers driving erratically. The cons would seem to fall mostly on the high school and the city because they would have to be constantly opening and closing the gates, when the private citizens would not be available to do so. What about game days? Does the gate remained closed? I think that a gate would be a hassle for two powerful entities, the school and the municipal government so I predict that there will be no gate any time soon.

Lastly, it was proposed to use the acreage left by the new water treatment plant as a sport complex with baseball diamonds, soccer fields, etc. This is an intriguing idea but with the economy still in a rut, I don't know that residents of Shelley would go for the construction and upkeep of such a park. Maybe in the future--

What do you think?
